My Bert, years ago, got hit by a car and streaked back into the house with a broken jaw. Mom and I grabbed him and sped off to the emergency vet. He was okay, thank goodness, but had to have his jaw wired shut. Mom and I were going across the desert to my grandma’s the next day, so we took him with us.
To grandma’s and back took 6 playthroughs of that album. SIX. Good thing everyone in the car liked Croce.
On the drive across Bert waaaiiilllled. Poor baby. His jaw hurt and he couldn’t open his mouth and he was in the car and life was HORRIBLE and we were HORRIBLE and everything was HORRIBLE. In desperation mom put in a cassette tape of Jim Croce’s Greatest hits. Bert immediately stopped wailing and started purring and slept. It was like flipping a switch, I swear. When the tape finished Bert woke up and started wailing again. Curious, mom started the tape and Bert quieted again.
